General Overview

Some highlights from my lab experiences

Nov 11, 2019 – Arabidopsis seedlings from 3 different lines being grown in MS media under Low Light Conditions

Don Ort Lab (Oct 2019 - March 2020)

Recorded multiple aspects of plant physiology relating to biomass production such as leaf number, harvest weight, and dry weight.

Cultivated and transplanted Arabidopsis seedlings from MS media into flats

  • Maintained Arabidopsis seedlings in several growth chambers with varying light intensity/duration, temperature, and CO2 (Long Day, Short Day, High Temp, Low Light/High Light, High CO2)

A sample of kernels from orange and blue popcorn lines

Studer Lab (Sept 2018 - March 2020)

Identified possible new alleles of the pr1 gene (influences red pigments in corn) by testing DNA primers through PCR and gel electrophoresis

  • Gained proficiency in DNA purification techniques and NanoDrop spectrophotomer to investigate chosen DNA primers
  • Performed DNA extraction on Apache Red lines for genotyping
  • Analyzed sequencing data with Sequencher to verify new allele of the pr1 gene

UIC Plant Research Lab (Jan 2018 - May 2018)

  • Learned fundamentals of ornamental plant propagation, pest identification, and greenhouse operations under greenhouse manager Matthew Frazel
  • Sustained a variety of prairie plants native to Illinois for conservation research and restoration
  • Assisted in setting up beehives for designated pollinator habitats on the Plant Laboratory grounds

Wise Lab (Jan 2018 - May 2018)

  • Performed soil organic matter analysis (SOM) under Amanda Henderson relating to symbiotic relationships within food webs between microarthropods/mycorrhizae
  • Prepared and measured pH of soil samples
  • Gained knowledge of proper record keeping in a research setting by document all data in a lab notebook
